marseilles, france

Our next day trip from Avignon was to Marseilles. Neither of us really knew what to expect there, we pretty much just chose it because it was fairly close and we wanted to explore the region of Provence more.

When we got there we made our train reservation for our trip from Avignon to Nice just to be sure. We also tried making our reservation for our train into Italy, but they were having problems linking to the Italian network with their computers so we couldn't make that one.

As soon as we stepped out of the train station we were impressed with Marseilles. It's so pretty! Beautiful rolling hills and trees.. with tons of cool buildings squeezed in between. We searched high and low for some cheap food, really not wanting to have to resort to McDonalds or fast food..yick..We found a little Chinese place that was pretty good, then walked around the old port for a while. Then we made our way up the big hill to the Notre Dame Basillica which overlooks the entire city. The climb was well worth it, the view of the harbour and city was awesome!I was so glad we had decided to go there, what a pleasant surprise!

We spent the rest of the time just roaming around, and we felt like icecream so we went to the grocery store instead of an icecream stand because it's so much cheaper! They didn't really have individual icecreams or popsicles though, so we ended up buying the "happymix" box of mixed ice creams and popsicles, lol. There were like 6 different things and we ate them all! muhahah.. they were all delicious (and still cheaper than buying only one from a vendor!) I also bought a new camera case made by this company called Crumpler..it's really cool and takes up a lot less room in my bag..

We missed the train we were planning on taking back to Avignon because we were taking pictures of the view from the station and the beautiful sunset. We waited like an hour for the next one and were on our way back to Avignon for the night.
